Weekend Plans & A Giveaway From Bijou Market

First off,
thanks everyone for your support for my Dad. It was close. John Curtis is a good man and I am sure he'll bring a great energy to our city. I need to be honest here though, the new city council is a train wreck. Not even one I can manage to watch. Brace yourselves. Brace, brace, brace!

Secondly, on to the weekend plans. So much going on!

Bijou Market is coming to town this Saturday on November 7th and has brought with it a basket for me to giveaway! (See below for details.) Here is what I like about Bijou Market, it is a tri-annual handmade event produced by three Utah Valley women (is there a theme of three here?) All vendors are local, if not from Utah County then Utah or neighboring states. Mostly, I am so thrilled about the event being held on 9th east (by Stan's, across from Golds) which is down the street from me! I hope to cross off my Christmas lists early and have the warm fuzzy of shopping local.

Go early and shop,
then for lunch hop over to Stan's. Even if all you order is a plate of fries with sauce you will not be disappointed. Chup and I call label them Provo's Best Fries.

See more info on invite above, or go to bijoumarket.com for giveaways, and a sneak peak of what is to come!

On Saturday night (Nov. 7th) at the Covey Center for the Arts, actors, musicians, singers and others who are talented in ways I am not, are joining together to raise money and awareness for Epidermolysis Bullosa a rare skin disorder. I was ignorant about EB until KaDee Troop emailed me about this event. KaDee's son Zack lives with this debilitating condition which in his case is terminal. My love goes out to Zack, he is a handsome guy.

I looked at the line-up of talent and it looks to be a very enjoyable evening. Headlining the event is Corbin Allred with Adam Johnson as MC. In full disclosure, my husband has sometimes calls Adam my boyfriend because I think he's great on film. Now I need to further explain this comment by adding that my husband and Adam are friends and this shouldn't be awkward. But now I am feeling awkward, so instead of pressing delete I shall just move on.

See more about the event by going to coveycenter.org

For a dinner recommendation before the show, may I suggest the gnocchi at Gloria's Little Italy. I like it smothering in pink sauce. Then I like to cap things off with a mini nutella tart. Read Provo's own Rookie Cookie for her review of the place. (Also, get reservations!)

Are you still with me?

Great because I have a prize basket to unload on one lucky c jane's guide to Provo reader courtesy of Bijou Market.

Behold Neighbors, I give you a giveaway!

One lucky winner will receive all of these pieces . . .

1 Kantan Designs "Scatter Sunshine" 11x14 print $7.50

I loveee giveaways. Almost as much as I love the orange rolls at the Provo bakery. or Shirleys bakery. I can't decide.

For restaurants, I love the Bombay House and Thai Ruby. Be still, my hungry heart!

The Flower Basket is also fun for pretty, girly things, as is the recently discovered (to me) Cherry Lane Keepsakes.

I am so excited you posted about the benefit concert for EB! I sang with Jamie in Women's Chorus at BYU. She is one of the sweetest girls you will ever meet! A true inspiration. Doesn't she look stunning in that picture?! I'm so happy to know about this event. Thanx so much!!

Thai Ruby... we live far far away and I still dream of their Beef Thai Salad.

Does one need to be a Provo resident to enter?

If not, I am dying to try Rooster next time I'm in Provo. I drool everytime you talk about it!

Although I've never lived there, I grew up coming to Provo often to visit my grandparents. I'm not very good at knowing where Provo ends and Orem starts, but my favorite business is one that is no longer in business. It was called Fruits, Nuts, and Stuff in the University Mall. It was an old fashioned candy store and it belonged to my grandparents. What a magical part of my childhood. I was literally like a kid in a candy store, but instead of parents to limit me, I had grandparents to turn me loose. The store has been closed for like 15 years, but it still holds so much meaning for me. I think it is a clock store now, but I would love to know if anybody remembers this gem of my youth? As for now, can't come to Provo without hitting J Dogs for a cross-cut grilled dog with sauce, banana peppers, and an apple beer. So good! -Andrea from California

I love the flower basket boutique and Kaleidescope. There are alot of fun places in Provo, I wish we could make the hour drive there more often! Oh! and Sammy's to get a pie shake!

Krista said...

Ok I love The Flower Basket! Is that locally owned? I have no idea, but I'm going to guess yes. It's adorable, regardless.

Kathleen said...

I was trying to come up with which I would put as my favorite and asked my husband his opinion. He quickly replied, "Vallejo Drywall" (the drywall business he owns). I said, "Oh yeah, of course that's mine too, but which one after that?" He knew I hadn't even been thinking of saying Vallejo Drywall and was a little disappointed in me. Oops. :D

So AFTER Vallejo Drywall, I'd have to say that I LOVE Gloria's and the Provo Bakery. It's really hard to choose between the two.

You said locally owned business and I'm going to join the crowd and mention a restaurant: Pantrucas. It's a Chilean restaurant off Canyon Road in the Days Market shopping center. If you haven't been there you want to try the Churrascos Palta Sandwich(Steak Avocado Tomato), it's unbelievable!

Whit said...

So I haven't "lived" in Provo for a while, but my grandmother has been there all my life and I visit as often as I can. She lives a few blocks from Ripples. It is on Canyon Rd. - the FRESH LIME is the best you will ever have. I PROMISE. Not to mention the blackberry shake. Seriously.

Now I am hungry.

Rosalee said...

I love Los Hermanos. Their chips and salsa are SO good plus they have so many yummy meals. I was routing for your dad and wished I could vote for him! Too bad I live in Orem.

I just love Provo, period. My husband is in Iraq, so every month since January I have packed my infant son, Max, up and we have painted the Provo streets red. My Grandparents and Sister live in Provo. The Grandparents are retired after being art professors at BYU, and my sister is currently an art student there. The first day I'm there, we all have lunch at SPARK and get cupcakes at The Sweet Tooth Fairy. There are also several trips to JDawgs and Bombay House. I love shopping at Riverwoods (so sad that Black Chandelier closed!!) and seeing movies at the newly renovated University Mall theaters. I also love driving up and down the tree lanes wishing I lived there.

Ashley Davidson said...

My husband and I both absolutely love Bombay House. It always sounds good!

This is such a fun place and they switch it up every few weeks. They even have a scrapbook you can read about the history of the building as the old BYU Women's Gymnasium. My grandpa helped lay the wood floors in the early 1900's and when I told the owner she was so nice and told me when I had time I could come look around behind the scenes and see all the original stuff.

Ricki said...

My husband used to drag me to Lon's Cookin' Shack over and over until I too was dreaming about the Fried Cauliflower. It wasn't an immediate favorite, but I haven't had anything from the cabbage family deep fried since... so I miss it and it becomes more favorite. I also had my first thai food at Thai Ruby and have had a love affair with thai curry ever since.

Katie said...

That's easy, Provo Bakery-never knew knew I loved apple fritters until I met them!

Julie said...

Sweet Tooth Fairy, and Guru's, and all the little photography studios, and Los Hermanos especially the fried ice cream, and Sammy's, and RICE KING for their orange or szechwan tofu, and I know the ugly boutique in the old BYU women's gymnasium doesn't count but I just think that building is so beautiful.

My favorite place was the giving tree on 500 w and 100 s. However, to my great dismayal, it closed down the end of August. It was the cutest consignment store! i'd have to say a favorite of ours was thai ruby on 820 N 700 E. we've tried a few other thai places in provo/orem and that was our favorite by far! you HAVE to get the sticky rice with mangos for dessert. sooooooo good!

Taraleigh said...

I love Thai Ruby! The food is great and the service too. Some friends of ours introduced us to the place and we've loved it ever since.

I love the Flower Basket, the house is so adorable, and I love the idea of a flower shop/boutique. I also really love Gloria's Little Italy, I can never choose between the pesto and the pink sauce. And those chocolate cakes are incredible. And does Macey's count? Provo is not their only location, but I love to buy my groceries there. Especially since you have to see at least one person you know every time you visit.

J Dawgs, what can I say, I'm a sucker for hot dogs. Their special sauce and pickles are amazing! :)

I love love LOVE The Bombay House. And Kneaders. Man oh man how I miss Provo and its eats.

Natalie said...

I love Indian food, so Bombay House and Indian Palace are at the top of my list. For our anniversary we got take out from Indian Palace and took a scooter up Provo Canyon, but forgot any silverware! Fortunately we had plenty of naan, so we just ate with our hands and washed them in the river when we were done. The AMAZING food, the beauty of the canyon on a perfect September day, we LOVE this memory! I suggest everyone do the same sometime. But remember to forget the silverware...it really is better that way=)

The guys at Mullet Hoover are wonderful, they have amazing jewelry and they are a great local business. Also, a great food joint is Sammy's. Have you tried the cupcake shakes? They use cupcakes from Sweet Tooth Fairy...yummy!

Brittany said...

So many great places in Provo... but I'll have to go with J-Dawgs. I just love them; they make hotdogs sound good anytime of day!

Does Orem count? I love Pizzeria 712 with my whole wallet. If not, I'll go with Communal.

I hope Spanish Fork is close enough... because my favorite little baby jewlery store is My Little Sweetpea! If you have little girls you must have one of these (o and they have cute blankets, burpies, binki clips and the whole bit for little boys and girls)

I LOVE downtown Provo. I have to say Sweet Tooth Fairy takes the cake though (ha! no pun intended).

We just moved out of Provo, and now everytime we go back for a BYU game, I make sure to stop and pick up a sugar cookie. MmmmMMmmmm

Through the Looking Glass said...

I live in SLC, so I don't go to Provo often, however I was recently there for work and popped into Provo Bakery with your recommendation on my mind. The sugar cookies! The chocolate chocolate donut! The donut holes! Okay, I didn't eat ALL that by myself, but I had bites of each of the treats I brought home for my kids and husband. It was exactly what I pictures: Quaint, family-friendly, real and cozy. That's my pick...

Clint and Nicole said...

i love sub zero ice cream! my hubby loves mad dog cycles (but i think that's in orem).

I know you already mentioned Stan's, and I shouldn't use it, but I adore that place. Seriously - the fries are to die for. Oh well, I'll have to go for another greasy spoon, Ripple's on Canyon Road. I grew up behind it and love it.

Dance Works. Where we got all our necessary dance apparel - point shoes, tights, tutus, ballroom shoes, leggings, swishy skirts, costumes, etc.

My good friend Dallas even creates custom point shoes, they are a work of art!

Provo Bakery and Sweet Tooth Fairy! I love my baked goods!

The top three for our family:
Shirley's Bakery on Freedom. Their orange rolls are the best!
JDawgs. Yumm.
Ripples on Canyon Road. Limeades are what summer is all about.

Nicolitalia Pizzeria!

Those giveaway items are CUTE!

I'm agreeing with the previous comments of La Dolce Vita. Not too expensive, they are original Italian recipes with little or no garlic(unlike other chain restaurants) and the comment about it being great family friendly atmosphere is spot on. I've loved this place for a long time. Although it came in second to La Buena Vita that was on 1st west and center, but has been closed for many years now(I would argue that they had the best gnocchi). And we've only been there once, but the Hines Mansion was wonderful and I love the location.
P.S. I think this question was brilliant. I loved reading through the comments to see if there are places I've never heard of. and its a great little spot for your reader's to give plugs to those greta store owners, even if we don't know them.

oooooh la la!

I love the giveaway items!

My favorite business in Provo, although probably cliche, is Soel Boutique in the Riverwoods!

LOOOOVE it. I used to work at Tucanos, and as soon as I'd get off work I'd take my tips over to soel and SPEND them.

It was so great... until it was time to pay rent.

Hmm... a few Provo favorites are Joe Vera's, Coal Umbrella and Juicy Nails. Juicy is the best for pedicures!!

I love Alice Lane on state street! Such an inspirational store for home decor.

Magelby's Fresh (could drink the syrup) and the Malt Shoppe (try the peanut butter, peanut butter cup shake. My roomates and I used to eat them every Monday night.) I also really love the MOA Cafe (can you say poppyseed pasta?!?!?)

Lunch with my hubby at Ottavio's on beautiful Center Street. Dave's Bernina store is great, too.

I love Stans. My brother and I always went on Monday night for half price shakes. Yum. I go everytime I visit Utar.

Mickelle's Minute said...

Ottavio's on center...was my favorite when we moved 7 years ago...sigh! My husband used to eat, study (most quiet place he could find), and spend way too much of our student budget at Sam Hawk. I hope all these are still around so they can benefit from a revived downtown!

I love that boutique on the corner of 5th N and University. They have the cutest handbags! Also, it's pretty awesome that it's in the old BYA Gymnasium. I love that building.

I live on the east coast. I have not been to provo but I want to do a cross country roadtrip one day! I have gone through the comments and have read through the locals favorite places. I'll have to check them out one day!
Either way, everything looks so cute! I hope to be picked

With all the cupcakeries in Utah County, it's hard to choose, but I would dare say Cupcake Chic or Sweet Tooth Fairy!

melissa said...

Mmm, so many good local places to choose from. I spent 6 lovely years in Provo while attending BYU, and I'm excited to see that Provo keeps adding more flare, especially to their downtown area. Malt Shoppe was my favorite shake go-to joint, Guru's has the best sweet potato fries, Gloria's Little Italy is such a cute little authentic restaurant, White Willow is a beautiful reception center, the El Salvadorian place on Center Street has awesomely delicious pupusas, Velour has seen some incredible musical talent over the years (specifically Fictionist), and I can't wait to try Rooster Noodle Bar, Spark, and Communal. My mouth is watering!

Traci said...

I know it's a repeat but Shirley's has the best soft and gooey sweet rolls EVER!

Morgan said...

Oh my goodness this giveaway is awesome! I actually don't live in P-Vo but I would have to say my favorite place would be where I got my wedding dress: Walker's Bridal! And for 250 bucks!! It was magical

Melissa said...

Mine and my husband's favorite is definitely Lon's Cookin' Shack on University. They have the only potato salad that my husband will eat. Oh, I'm totally having a craving now!

Ace said...

Ooohh, pick me, pick me! Everything is fab, but that bicycle locket is a must have.

When my husband and I first started dating he was a "zoob" and ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at Los Amigos there in Provo. To be totally honest, I'd never even dared attempt the place. Then when he told me he loved it so much he'd decided that his wedding luncheon would be catered by Los, well that was nearly a deal breaker.

Then I went there.

And suddenly like water, like breath, like rain (Leann Rimes) I needed it. Oh how I needed that smothered burrito with cheese and onions--again, and again and again!

It is still our "go to" when we're stumped on date night dining.

What girl's favorite locally owned place isn't The Sweet Tooth Fairy! Followed by a close second Gloria's Little Italy. We know them. We love them. Never tried the gnocci though- especially in the pink sauce! I shall try that next time in your honor!

Adele Heslington said...

We don't live their anymore, but I have to say that every time we are up visiting family, we have to go to Stan's and get a Milk Shake. And how I miss Joe Vera's!

Nicolitalia's Pizzeria on University Parkway. Sooooooo good, and Best of State 2009 Winner in the category for pizza. The owner is from Boston and fun to listen to, too.

Plain cheese thin crust is even absolutely amazing!
